Jennifer Lazar, FDNP
Meet Jennifer

“Hi, I’m Jennifer Lazar. Like many, I struggled for years with health issues no one could explain because my symptoms didn’t fit the definition of any disease. Time and again, I was told everything was ‘normal,’ when I knew it wasn’t. I looked everywhere for answers but soon got lost in a forest of dietary and supplement advice. Nothing worked. Frustrated, I began to believe it was all in my head, that I should just accept reality and live with it. But I kept going, learning to test my body to find out what was really going on and make changes. Bit by bit, I began to see results. Then I found that what I was doing on my own – with the help of some skilled practitioners – was a proven method with a name: Functional Diagnostic Nutrition. I was all in! The results led me to become a certified FDN Practitioner myself, and now I help others. Healing begins with the realization that your body is like no other, a combination of chemistry, microbiome, genetics, habits, and environment that is yours alone. Knowing – not guessing – why it’s not functioning optimally is the first step to feeling better. If you’re ready, I’m here to guide you on that journey.”

What is Functional Diagnostic Nutrition?

Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (FDN) is a holistic, evidence-based approach for investigating and resolving the underlying causes of chronic health problems not associated with disease.

Drawing on data from comprehensive health histories and self-administered, in-home testing kits, certified practitioners (FDNPs) work hand-in-hand with clients over time to uncover internal and external stressors, such as metabolic, hormonal, environmental, immune, digestive, or nervous system issues. They then create individualized, drug-free plans to address them.

FDN protocols typically involve nutritional and behavioral changes in the key areas of diet, rest, exercise, stress reduction, and supplementation. The FDN process takes place over several months, depending on the complexity of a client’s health concerns, during which FDNPs offer coaching, support, and resources. Clients in turn report how their bodies respond, providing valuable feedback in a learning loop that informs and refines their personalized plan.

The FDN motto is “Test. Don’t Guess.”

Functional Nutrition FAQs

  • Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioners, FDNPs for short, are part health detectives, part health coaches and guides. They have been trained and certified to interpret data from functional lab tests to identify the root causes of chronic, stress-related disorders and correct them with changes in diet, lifestyle, and supplementation. FDNPs work closely with clients over a period of months, offering support, encouragement, and resources as clients implement and adjust to their personalized protocols.

  • Metabolic Chaos® is a term used in FDN to describe a cascading disruption of multiple metabolic processes within our bodies. This disorder can be caused by a variety of factors, such as poor diet, environmental toxins, stress, and genetic disorders. Metabolic Chaos usually involves several issues, which might include poor sleep, irregular periods in women, joint pain, fatigue, weight gain, skin problems, brain fog, and digestive issues, among others.

  • Functional lab tests are a type of diagnostic tool used to identify the underlying causes of health issues. These tests look at biological markers in the body to determine how its systems are functioning as a whole. Markers for six bodily systems are usually investigated: hormones, immune system, digestion, detoxification, energy production, and the nervous system. FDN practitioners analyze the data returned by these tests to find stressors that could be contributing to poor health and to guide the creation of personalized health plans.

  • Knowledge is a healthy thing! Here are a few reasons to begin working with a certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner:

    Know your metabolic type.

Find out precisely what kinds of foods provide the optimal source of energy for your particular body.

    Learn what to avoid.

Discover what food, beverages, habits, and environmental factors are triggering unwanted reactions and symptoms.

    Find out what’s missing.
Discover what nutrients are lacking in your current diet and which dietary changes and supplements will correct any deficiencies.

    Break unhelpful patterns.

Knowing which stressors impede optimal health is the first step in changing your habits. You’ll also learn how to create new thought and behavior patterns to help you manifest a healthier life.

    Get control of cravings.

Learn why you crave sugar and carbs and how to overcome the urge to raid the pantry between meals.

    Choose more mindfully.
Cultivate top-of-mind awareness of your nutritional and lifestyle choices and the impact they have on your health and how you feel.

  • Using a combination of functional laboratory testing, in-depth medical history, self-assessments, and symptom reporting, FDNPs determine the current state of your body’s key systems. To address any imbalances, they recommend specific changes to diet and lifestyle and coach clients through the process of returning their bodies to the healthiest natural state possible.

  • Epigenetics is the study of how environment and behavior affect the way our genes express themselves without changing the genetic code itself. Every cell in our bodies contains the same DNA instructions, but based on internal conditions they can express themselves differently to become, for example, a nerve cell, a muscle cell, a thyroid cell, and so on. Outside factors can also influence gene expression. Research shows that modern diets and lifestyles can encourage genes to express themselves in negative ways that lead to chronic dysfunction and disease. By changing certain conditions, such as our surroundings, food sources, activity levels, and stress, we can potentially “switch on” the genes associated with better health.

Additional Costs

At the core of FDN is the principle that every person is biochemically unique. Most clients will undergo a standard set of three to five functional laboratory tests, but we may need to substitute one or more labs for others based on what we discover in your intake session or the symptoms you report. Similarly, each person’s supplements, if needed at all, will vary based on lab results. For this reason, lab fees and supplement costs are not included in the price of service packages.

Planning for Lab Fees
FDN practitioners order lab tests on behalf of clients, who pay lab fees directly to various providers. While we do not set prices for labs, the fees shown here are typical and may be used for budgeting purposes.
